Name: Sophie

Age:  51

Factory Role: Prep Room Operative

Years at Goral: 18

What does a day in the life of a Prep Room Operative look like?

First things I do when I get in is collect my order for the day from clicking room then, depending on what shoes I’m making, I’ll either be splitting (thinning out the leather pieces to their desired thickness), skiving (thinning the edges of the leather pieces) or branding (using a metal stamp to emboss the leather with logos). I have to be steady and pay close attention to detail as any mistakes or imperfections mean the piece of leather has to be thrown away and remade.

How did you get into shoemaking?

I was working as a machinist making Children’s clothes until the company went bust, I decided to find something similar that offered more of a challenge and was told the Goral factory was hiring by a friend.

What are your favourite style of Gorals?

I really like the new Hadfields - especially in the off-white colourway.

What are your passions outside of work?

I love baking, especially when I challenge myself to make something I haven’t done before. I’m also a big Steelers fan and try and catch a game whenever I get chance.

Tell us something about yourself that people wouldn’t expect?

I put mustard on almost every meal I eat and have done since being a child.
