Unboxing the lowest top boots you can buy

When we first started working with Rose Anvil, the goal was simple: make something no one else was really making. Not just another cupsole sneaker, but a true hybrid, footwear built with the principles of a boot, shaped into the silhouette of a sneaker. That idea became SMUGS, and over the years, it’s grown into one of the most unique projects we’ve ever worked on.

As Rose Anvil puts it, there wasn’t really anyone out there building sneakers to true boot spec. SMUGS are different by design:

  • Cupsole construction with a stitched sidewall
  • Blake stitch for durability and resoling
  • Vegetable-tanned leather insoles
  • Boot-thickness leathers
  • Structured heel counters
  • High-top and low-top sneaker silhouettes
  • SMUGS are resoleable, something almost unheard of in sneaker culture, and why they age, crease and patina like proper footwear should.

From the start, the GORAL x Rose Anvil relationship has been about pushing ideas forward, not repeating them. We’ve created and evolved from:

Some people love high tops, others don’t. They can feel bulky, hot, or overly “bootish.” So the low top SMUGS were born from the same pattern, same last, same build, just cut lower.

Materials are where SMUGS really come alive. Many of the core SMUGS are built using Horween Chromexcel, including classics like Natural, Black and Dark Brown. Chromexcel is famous for its pull-up, meaning it lightens and darkens as it bends, giving every pair its own evolving look over time. They’re not meant to stay perfect, they’re meant to get better.

One of the most distinctive elements of the collaboration is Blood Core. On the surface, a Blood Core SMUG looks subtle, mostly black. But underneath the top layer sits a hidden, vivid core colour. In the case of Alien Blood Core, that colour is a striking, almost toxic green. As you wear them, scuff them, crease them, skate them, travel in them, and live in them, that core starts to show through. It’s footwear as a long-term project, not a disposable product.
