What makes Horween Chromexcel special?
Chromexcel is Horween’s flagship leather, built on a tanning recipe that has barely changed since the 1910s. It’s what’s known as a combination tanned leather, meaning it goes through both chrome tanning and vegetable re-tanning. Here’s the short version of what happens behind the scenes:
- It starts with chrome tanning for softness and stability
- It’s re-tanned using natural bark extracts for structure
- Then it’s hot-stuffed with Horween’s secret blend of oils, waxes, and greases
- Finally, it’s aniline dyed and hand-finished so the natural grain can shine through
This “recipe” is what gives Chromexcel its unmistakable character, rich, oily, soft in the hand, and full of depth when the light hits it. It’s also known as the original pull-up leather, meaning when you flex or bend it, the oils move within the hide, creating beautiful lighter tones along the bend, that colour shift is completely natural, and becomes part of the patina story over time.
How Chromexcel feels
If you’ve ever slipped on a pair of Chromexcel shoes, you’ll know exactly what we mean when we say it’s one of the most comfortable leathers straight out of the box. Chromexcel has a medium-soft temper, it’s supportive yet forgiving, structured yet buttery, it doesn’t require a long break-in, and the surface has a subtle sheen that can be brushed to a soft glow. Because it’s so heavily nourished with oils, it has a slightly “plush” hand-feel that sets it apart from most other leathers (and yes, that satisfying pull-up effect is part of the magic).
Strength, durability & patina
Chromexcel was originally created as a hardworking shoe leather, and that hasn’t changed, it’s tough, resilient, and ages gracefully. Some of the reasons we rely on it:
- It’s incredibly durable - we use it for our sneakers, but it’s strong enough for work-style boots
- Scuffs buff out easily - the oils resurface with just a finger rub
- It holds its shape - minimal long-term stretch
- It ages beautifully - developing depth, shine, and character over time
Despite its softness, this is not a delicate leather, it’s built to last, especially when paired with resoleable construction like ours.
What it looks like
Chromexcel is always full-grain and aniline finished, meaning nothing is hidden. You see the real surface, the natural markings, the subtle variations, the depth of colour. Colours range from natural tans and browns to green and deep black, all with that unmistakable, slightly “lived-in” visual warmth. It’s not glossy or overly finished, it’s honest leather with personality, and that’s exactly why we use it.
