Width fitting: Fit Guide

Fit guide

Regular (D) vs Wide (EE)

Most of our customers will feel right at home in our Regular Fit (D), it’s our standard width and suits the majority of foot shapes. But if you have a broader foot or often find standard shoes a little snug, our Wide Fit (EE) offers extra room across the forefoot for all-day comfort.

One last. Two widths. 4mm between them.
Foot diagram showing foot length and foot width measurements
Fit is width as much as length. Most snug shoes aren’t too short, they’re too narrow across the forefoot.

Our fit options

Choose the width that feels right

The Wide Fit (EE) styles are approximately 4mm wider in girth measurement than our Regular Fit (D) styles. This added space offers a more generous fit for broader feet without compromising structure or style.

Regular Fit

Standard width

A D fit is considered average width for men.

Wide Fit

+4mm approx

A Wide (EE) fit gives you more width across the forefoot.

Whether you go with D or EE, both fits are built on the same last and crafted with the same precision. The width is the only difference, the shape, silhouette, and quality remain identical.

Not sure what to pick?

Follow the simple rule of thumb

01

Choose Regular (D)

If you usually wear standard-width shoes and they fit just fine, choose Regular (D).

02

Choose Wide (EE)

If your shoes often feel tight across the front or sides, or you have a naturally wider foot, Wide (EE) might be the better call.

And remember, this isn’t something you need to overthink. If you’re not 100% sure, don’t stress. We offer a flexible returns policy so you can find your perfect fit with peace of mind.

Important fit information

Please also note: many factors influence a shoe’s fitting characteristics, including the materials used and overall design. Our size conversion table is based on standard approximations and should be considered a helpful guide rather than an exact science. Size Guide

Fit recommendation

MELLOR sizing

Every pair of GORALs is stamped with a UK size. Most people take one to one size down from their US Brannock measurement or US sneaker size.

If you already wear shoes from makers who use the traditional sizing, such as Tricker's, White's, Nicks or Viberg, you'll usually take the same size in GORAL. Compared with US boot makers like Red Wing, you'll usually go half a size down. The exact fit depends on the last, so check the guide for your style below.

TOLEDO LAST

THE LAST INFORMATION

The G1 is our everyday last. It has a rounded almond toe, a generous forefoot and plenty of room throughout, and it fits a wide range of feet comfortably, from C to EE widths. Every pair comes with a removable, padded leather footbed. If you need more room, you can swap it for a thinner insert. Sizing on the G1 is in line with other UK makers.

Important sizing information

Our size recommendations are based on the measurements you provide and general customer feedback. Fit preferences vary and we can't guarantee a perfect match for everyone. Sizing advice doesn't affect our returns policy; customers remain responsible for return shipping costs on exchanges and returns.

How to measure your feet

All you need is a piece of paper, a pen and something flat like a hardcover book.

  1. Stand against the wall

Stand on the paper with your heel flat against the wall.

  2. Place the book at your toe

Place the book upright against your longest toe so it sits at a right angle to the floor, then mark where it meets the paper.

  3. Measure your foot

Measure the distance from the wall to the mark. That is your foot length.

  4. Match the size chart

Match your measurement to the size table.

What our customers say

Sizing FAQs

Which size should I choose for MELLOR?

Stay with your natural shoe size. Most customers are their natural shoe size in MELLOR, fitting mostly true to size. Use your measured foot length as a check and do not add extra room.

View the MELLOR size guide.

Which size should I choose for SMUGS?

Start half a size down. Most customers are a half size down from their natural shoe size because SMUGS is an unlined style. Use your measured foot length as a check.

View the SMUGS size guide.

Should I choose Regular D or Wide EE?

Regular D is the standard width. Wide EE gives approximately 4mm more girth across the forefoot and is intended for broader feet or customers whose standard-width shoes feel tight across the front or sides. Both widths use the same last.

What size should I choose for MUGGS 2.0?

Most MUGGS 2.0 owners say GORAL runs true to size. If you have a high instep or wide feet, the product guidance recommends choosing the EE width.

WE DONT JUST RESOLE, WE REBUILD+

When you buy GORALs, you buy them for life. Every pair is built with premium leather components that can be restored, renewed, and rebuilt, so they only get better with age. When the sole wears down, Rebuild+ brings them back better than new, with all the patina and character intact.

5 REASONS TO REBUILD+ YOUR GORAL SHOES

Purpose

A pair of GORAL shoes isn't a purchase you make twice. Resoling extends the life of something you've already invested in, protecting that investment rather than starting again from scratch.

Comfort

A shoe that's been worn in is a shoe that fits, as the leather has moulded to your foot. Resoling means keeping all of that comfort rather than breaking in something new.

Patina

Every scuff, crease and mark on your leather is a record of where you've been. Resoling preserves all of that character while giving the shoe a fresh foundation.

Purpose

Every GORAL is designed from the ground up to be resoled. The Blake stitch construction, the leather components, the felt filler, every decision made during construction had the resole in mind.

Quality

The leather, the construction, the components, none of that wears out the way a sole does. Resoling replaces the one part that's designed to take the impact, while everything that makes the shoe worth keeping stays exactly as it is.

Built to wear in, not wear out

Resoleable construction

Designed to be repaired, restored and worn for years.

Handmade in England

Crafted in small batches with premium materials and expert attention to detail.

Trusted, premium materials

Using leather that is certified sustainable by the Leather Working Group (LWG).

Family run craft

Four generations of shoemaking knowledge and a belief in doing things properly.
