Can You Age Natural Veg Tan Leather Quickly?
At GORAL we believe shoes should do more than just last, they should live.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce our latest limited release: the Mellor II, Samara, and SMUGS, now available in natural vegetable tanned leather, developed in collaboration with the world-renowned Maryam Tannery in Italy.
This one-of-a-kind leather starts as a soft, pale pink and gradually deepens into a rich caramel, developing a unique patina shaped entirely by how you wear them. No two pairs will age the same, each one tells its own story.
Want to Speed Up the Patina Process? Here’s How.
Getting a head start on the aging process is surprisingly easy (and strangely satisfying). Here’s how to give your veg tan shoes the perfect jump-start:
1. Apply a natural conditioner.
Think of the leather like dry winter skin, it needs a little moisture to come alive. Choose a conditioner free of harsh chemicals; after all, this leather has avoided chemicals so far, so let’s not spoil it now. Apply it evenly to ensure a consistent tone across the shoe.
2. Don’t panic.
At first, the leather may look blotchy or darker than expected. That’s normal. Let it dry, and you’ll see the colour even out beautifully as the oils soak in.
3. Let the sun do its thing.
Yes, really. Set them in direct sunlight, on your windowsill, in the garden, wherever you can. Like a British tourist on holiday, a bit of sun goes a long way. The longer you leave it, the deeper the colour.
4. Wear them, hard.
After their sunbath, put them through their paces. The more you wear your shoes, the more character they’ll build. Scuffs, bends, flexes, this is how they become yours. We’ve even been known to leave our own pairs on the windowsill during office hours for that extra glow.
This leather is as rare as it is beautiful, and we’ve only been able to craft a small number of pairs. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
If you want a pair of shoes that truly grows with you, visibly, naturally, and beautifully, this is your moment.
