SMUGS high or low? Here’s what you need to know

You might already know SMUGS. They started as our high-top, but built more like a boot than a sneaker. Weston at Rose Anvil once called them “sneakers built like a boot” and the name stuck. Now, we’re introducing the low-top version, same build, philosophy and premium leather, just lower on the ankle and easier to wear every day.

Both the high and low top SMUGS come in two standout leathers, Horween Chromexcel and Blood Core. Both start firm but soften quickly, developing creases, colour depth, and a unique patina that makes each pair completely your own. We use boot-quality leather across all our sneakers because unlike most sneakers, ours are resoleable. That means when the sole wears down, you don’t throw the shoes away, we replace it through our Rebuild+ service, preserving the hard-earned patina of the upper and making your GORALs feel as good as new.

When it comes to choosing high or low, we find that people tend to either wear one or the other. We think there’s room for a very good version of each in every man’s shoedrobe, because the profiles tend to serve slightly different purposes. Here’s how we think they differ:

SMUGS high top are best for you if you:

  • Like a bit more structure around the ankle
  • Wear them in cooler weather to keep your feet cozy
  • Prefer a slightly rugged, workwear-inspired feel
  • Want something that feels closer to a boot

How they wear in:
They take a little longer to break in, but once they do, they’re solid and supportive. The leather softens and creases beautifully over time, developing that rich patina unique to your pair. Ideal if you’re on your feet a lot, walking long distances, or just like a shoe that feels substantial.

SMUGS low top are best for you if you:

  • Prefer a cleaner, lower-profile look
  • Want the same boot-quality leather, just less around the ankle
  • Want something easy to throw on every day
  • Need a spring / summer shoe to pair with chinos or shorts

How they wear in:
They soften quickly, move more freely, and start to feel like part of your daily routine. Most people reach for this pair without even thinking. Perfect for spring, summer, or any day you want that boot-level build with sneaker-like ease.

If you are still unsure, a lot of people notice this pattern:

High-top = colder months or heavier wear

Low-top = spring, summer, and everyday life

Either way, you’re getting a solid, well-made shoe that only gets better the longer you own it. The leather will continue to break in, the patina will develop, and the resoleable construction ensures your SMUGS are built to last - as Weston at Rose Anvil says they are “The only sneaker in the world to get better with age”.
